About the Symphony

Dear Friends of the Auburn Symphony,

Greetings and welcome to our 24th season. The musicians and I feel blessed and honored to perform in a community made up of so many lovers of classical music. I continue to be extremely pleased with the steady growth of our orchestra and the professional level of our musicianship, which allows us to stretch our musical boundaries year after year.

And I am also gratified to report that our outreach programs, bringing classical music into the schools and youth in the area, are vibrant and growing, reaching thousands of school-aged children. We could not do any of this without the unwavering support from our season subscribers.

Our 2011-2012 “Miracles of Music” season promises to be one of our most thrilling and challenging ever. I have enjoyed assembling a wide-ranging program of musical delights that spans the musical spectrum from the Baroque to the 21st century, and we have never offered finer or more distinguished soloists.

Highlights include the free Concert in the Park, with popular light classics and music from the films, where we are delighted to also welcome the Placer County Youth Orchestra. Our three Masterworks Concerts feature great symphonies by Sibelius and Bruckner, as well as a real ‘coup’: the recently composed, tuneful and attractive Violin Concerto by American composer Lee Actor, with celebrated dedicatee Pip Clarke as soloist – with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol in the same concert. Rachmaninov’s 2nd Symphony, so excitingly performed in Auburn last season, will resound in the wonderful acoustics of Mondavi next April, together with Borodin’s brilliant Polovetsian Dances, for which three excellent choirs will join the orchestra. To these we add our annual Messiah Sing-Along, the Saturday morning KinderKonzert, and two beautiful Chamber Players programs at the State Theatre, to complete a season which is sure to excite your musical taste buds!

We know you expect the finest in great music from us, and it is truly our pleasure and privilege to offer these programs to you.

Thank you for all of your support, and we are especially grateful to those of you who are part of our Circle of Friends, which is so critical to our mission. Please consider joining if you are not already part of our ‘family’.

Warmest regards,

Maestro Michael Goodwin
