Studied in Chicago with Nancy Fako, Frank Brouk, and Kale Clevenger of the Chicago Symphony and at Tanglewood with Charles Kavalovsky. Appointed Principal of Chicago Civic Orchestra in 1966, he began his professional career playing extra horn on Bruckner and Mahler Symphonies with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 17.
In 1968, while a student at Northwestern University he joined the horn section of Chicago’s Lyric Opera Orchestra. Moving to Principal in 1975 he played Fidelio, Die Meistersinger, Elektra, Carmen, Faust, and Manon Lescaut among others through 1977.
He joined the Houston Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal in 1978 and played Principal Horn for Der Rosenkavalier, Aida, Tosca, Jenufa, and Falstaff with Houston Grand Opera before auditioning for Kurt Herbert Adler and joining San Francisco Opera as Co-Principal in 1980.
Notable during his time in San Francisco: Wagner’s Ring, Rossini’s Otello, Britten’s Billy Budd, and the premiere of John Adams’ new opera, Dr. Atomic which included a horn solo composed especially for him.
He played the 1987 and 1993 summer seasons as Principal Horn for the Santa Fe Opera, and played guest Principal for St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in 2006. He has been a member of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra since 1990 and played Principal for their 2007 repertory season.
His wife Jill Brindel plays cello in the San Francisco Symphony.
