Maestro Michael Goodwin and the Auburn Symphony are preparing for another season of live music.

The Auburn Symphony is ready to give you an earful — this is a good thing.

The symphony kicks off its 2011-2012 season with “Auburn Symphony in the Park,” which takes place Saturday at the Auburn School Park Preserve, 55 College Way. The free, family friendly concert runs from 6-8 p.m.

“It originally started as a way to give back to the community and a way to introduce people to the qualities and the capabilities of the orchestra,” said Bill Kenney, Auburn Symphony board president.

This is the third year the symphony has kicked off its season with the al fresco performance.

“The audience just keeps growing,” said Liz Briggs, vice president of the symphony board.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Saturday.

“People can come early and enjoy a picnic at the park,” Briggs suggested.

The Placer County Youth Orchestra goes on at 6 p.m.

Margie Hartung, conductor and director of the Placer County Youth Orchestra, hopes Saturday’s show captures the interest of younger audience members.

“It’s very difficult to take small children to a concert where they’re expected to sit for a long time,” she said. “(This is) more informal. We really need to be courting our youth because they’re the next generation of classical musicians.”

The Auburn Symphony is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The symphony’s set list includes more light-hearted selections, including songs from the “Harry Potter” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” films.

Briggs said her favorite song on the list is Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries.”

The concert also features a special tribute to the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Kenney said Saturday’s show is sure to appeal to a diverse audience.

“It’s designed to be music for everybody, music everybody will like and recognize,” he said. “It’s trying to be a little bit of all things to all people.”

The show is also sure to lift people’s spirits, Kenney said.

“It’s going to make them feel better,” he said. “It allows them to escape a little bit to a place where their mind can expand.”

Early-Bird Registration Now thru August 1st!

EVENT: Four-person scramble fun tournament.  Full 18 holes of golf, including cart, green fees, professional scoring, tee prizes, lunch buffet and barbeque dinner.  Check-in begins 10:30 a.m.; shotgun start at 12:00 Noon.  Golf Classic fun opportunities include: Putting contest, Hole-In-One and Long Drive contests, Raffles, Vacation Getaway Sweepstakes, Silent Auction and more!

ELIGIBILITY: Each foursome must consist of players totaling an index of 60 or more.  Golfers who do not play often, or those who do not have a handicap, will be assigned a maximum index of 36.  Each foursome may not play with more than one player below an index of 8.  Each player is required to have fun and enjoy the day of golf!

FORMAT: Each player in the foursome must have three drives used in the round of play.  The foursome selects whose drive will be used and all players will hit the second shot from that location, and so forth, until the foursome has “holed out”.
